TREES & PLANTS OF FUTURE

In recent times, scientists have observed a consistent rise in global temperatures, leading to noticeable shifts in local climate patterns. Even on our continent, we are beginning to experience the effects of climate change, evident in the escalation of extreme weather events. Prolonged periods of drought and high temperatures are altering the habitat of our trees, inducing a state of ‘stress’ in many of them.

In particular, certain tree species native to our regions are demonstrating greater adaptability to these fluctuating climatic conditions compared to many of those commonly cultivated in other major European production areas. This factor holds significant importance, as the demand for a greener and more habitable environment is increasing, expressed by both citizens and political decision makers. Moreover, for economic reasons, it is crucial to focus on the right species to utilize.

Therefore, we have decided to adapt our production by cultivating ‘modern plants’ that can make our cities more liveable, mitigate temperatures, absorb CO2, and present characteristics of tolerance to dry periods and resilience when exposed to stress. In the following table, we have provided a selection of these plants and highlighted those which, in addition to the aforementioned common traits throughout the list, are also robust in terms of low-temperature tolerance.
